Object Description
Sash of tapa cloth known as masi kesa (stenciled). Very long, somewhat narrow barkcloth decorated in the classic Fijian style. There is an elaborate linear and geometric stencilled design on one side done in a matte black pigment. Certain elements of the design are highlighted by freehand overpainting with a resinous red-brown pigment. Along the sides is a classic Fijian stripped, diagonal-cut fringe. One end is irregularily cut and the other end has a triangular cut fringe. The cloth is medium-weight, evenly pounded and made from a single sheet that is comprised of multiple individual layers beaten together. The cloth is made from several sheets joined by overlapping.
