Object Description
Tapa. The cloth has the appearance of a Saman produced cloth with Tongan and Samoan imagery and with some techniques (corded pattern) typical of Tongan cloths. Medium-weight two layer cloth with face side grain parallel to length and rear grain running widthwise. Four cut edges, hand-painted in a dark-brown resinous paint typical of Samoan cloths. The overall design was rubbed over a design tablet (upeti?) and appears with both corded and leaf motifs, known as a siapo tasina in Samoa.
