Object Description Paddle (1of 2) belonging to canoe 72-29-10/7128 (THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WAS OBTAINED DURING THE WATERCRAFT RESTORAGE PROJECT, 9/2000): Canoe is made of birch bark. The seams of the bark are stitched together with split root and sealed with pine or spruce pitch. There are 5 thwarts which are tennoned at their ends and lashed with split root into mortises in the gunwales. One of the headboards is missing. There are two distinctive, small rectangular patches of bark on the hull (due to native repair or are they original?)The catalog # (7128) is written on the middle thwart. Two paddles, also numbered 76-45-10/7128, go with the canoe. Dimensions: one paddle at 184.8cm x 15.2cm x 3.2cm, one paddle at 170.2cm x 14cm x 3.2cm *No spear was found with the canoe.
Inventory Description Paddle, flat blade, handle flattened and flared at tip, at base of handle when it meets the paddle there are three lines carved into both sides of the handle.
