Boys' initiation mask of Mondo rank

Object Description
Painted wooden mask with basketry hat surrounded with raffia ruff. Carved face mask is painted with red and blue pigments over a white kaolin ground. Handle at base suggests that the mask is meant to be held in front of the face. Basketry hat with five protrusions is stitched through holes at the top of the mask; raffia ruff is similarly secured to the mask and hat with plant fiber cordage. The hat is painted with blue and white pigments. This mask is of Mondo rank, made by maskmaker name Ngonzo
