Object Description
Brown agate ju-i scepter (broken in two pieces) with fingus motif carved on it. The ornamental knot is done in the "SHUANG HSI" character meaning "double happiness" - usually this character is found on gift and ornamental items representing, or in honor of, a wedding or marriage. The ju-i became a status symbol and its shape derives from the ancient backscratcher. Included in the 1940 Yamanaka inventory as #527, valued at $100.00. <transliteration> (Chinese name). 65 cm. (l) x 9.5 cm. (w) x 4.3 cm. (h).
