Object Description Cast of "sacrificial stone" Stone of Tizoc Mexica Aztec, circa A.D. 1485 Tenochtitlan (Mexico City), Mexico The Aztec emperor Tizoc (A.D. 1481-1486) commissioned this cylindrical stone sculpture to commemorate the young empire's expanding military conquests in the Valley of Mexico. Fifteen similar scenes show war captains grasping the hair of defeated foes, their conquered towns labeled by hieroglyphs behind their heads. The Aztec warriors are all given a "smoking foot" to mark them as embodiments of the Aztec god Tezcatlipoca (Smoking Mirror), patron of militarism and sacrifice. Tizoc is portrayed by one (and perhaps all) of the warrior figures, but we know these conquests were not his own-his reign was short and tarnished by military defeats.
