Wooden Lintel, Temple I, Tikal
Classic Maya, A.D. 695
Tikal, Guatemala
Early explorers found several carved wooden lintels in Tikal's massive temples, which are believed to commemorate history and royal ritual in the seventh and eighth centuries. Here the Tikal king Jasaw Chan K'awiil sits in an elaborate litter or palanquin, adorned with the large image of a "jaguar protector" that looms over his headdress. The litter may be a war trophy, captured from Tikal's northern rival Calakmul during a battle recorded in the accompanying inscription. The defeat is commemorated as the "fall of the knife-and-shield" of the Calakmul king, Yich'ak K'ak' (Claw of Fire).
