Object Description
Bark cloth, "Book of Tonga". The painted pictorial is structured in two halves with the facing left featuring the seal of Tonga with english lettering and below outline map of Tonga with specific historic sites featured and marked. On the facing right in the center region is an oval area depicting a fort-like structure with gates. Along the top entire edge are historical notations: (Top Left:) "TOURING OVER THE KINGDOM OF TONGA" (The following text describes the artistic depictions:) "Cook's ship (1777). Cook's Tree (1777). (Malumalu-10-Fulilangi). Cook's Landing Place ('ALAKI) Tonga (1777). Cook's Memorial Stone (1970). HA'AMONGA TRADITION (1200). Sun-Measurement to mark the seasons of the year. ANCIENT CALENDAR.
