Descriptions
Object Description Tinaja grande - large modern water jar, made in Mama,Yuc. Purchased about 1908 from Mama, Yac by San Juan de Dios Flores Marin and still used by him as winter storage in his house in Telchaquillo, Yuc. Max. dia. & 50 cm Redware, with cream band between fillets on upper sh. red design of flowers, birds and "Racuardo" on the cream band. Flores paid 3.50 mex. pesos or about 1.75 U.S. cy at that time. The entire ext. is coated with lime, as a preservative. This practice, noted frequently in pre-conquest Mayapan pottery, according to the older people of present day Telchaquillo was prevalent in the old days i.e when most people used pottery vessels for cooking, water carrying, and storage, before metal, porcelain and enamel utensils were readily available.
