Object Description Written on board: "Sauk and Fox Indian (Algonquian) / Keokuk, or The Watchful Fox. Sac & Fox. From M.C.Z. Dec. 24, 1904. / [verso] re:H5959 (Neg. 27069) This 19th C. print is a copy of a daguerrotype taken in 1847 by Thos. Easterly of Liberty, Mo. Keokuk died in 1848. (ref. Gail Buckland: First Photographs - People, Places & Phenomena as captured for The First Time by the Camera." N.Y. Macmillan. Pub 6. 1980. Plate on page 38.) It is not known whether the dag. was shot in Liberty at Easterly's studio or at the Sac-Fox reservation 70 mi distant in Kansas. Easterly's ad in St. Louis newspapers said he made "likenesses of . . .Infian Chiefs. . .[et al]."
