Written on board: "Eskimo - Noonitagmioot / (Eskimauan) / Women of Noonitagmioot Eskimo. Nootak River, Alaska. / taken at Baillie Island (NOT Hirschel) / [verso] "This was taken at Baillie Island. The ship "Beluga" was out of San Francisco; her skipper was Capt. Hartson Bodfish, whose log books are at the Whaling Museum, New Bedford." (per John Bockstoce, Curator of Ethnology, Whaling Museum. 14 March 1980)"
