Descriptions
Object Description
Written on board: "Colorado. / (Mesa Verde) / Cliff Palace from South / Gift of Professor F. W. Putnam. Taken at Mesa Verde Cliff Palace. September 1899. / (verso) Cliff Palace. This palace is located in Manos Canon, southwestern Colorado, and is the largest Cliff Dweller ruin ever discovered. It is 425 feet long, 80 feet deep, ten stories high, and is estimated to have contained more than 800 full rooms and to have accommodated at least 2,300 inmates. The ground floor contains 124 full rooms. The upper floors were in such ruins as to render it impossible to count the rooms. All of these Cliff dwellings are built under overhanging ledges and are thus protected from the weather." [see Object Description text entry for extended description]
