Written on board (historic caption, please see record for 99-12-10/53121 for up-to-date information about the robe): "Mandan Indians (Siouan) Buffalo robe painted by a Mandan man with design representing a battle fought about 1797 by the Sioux and Arikara against the Mandan, Minnetaree and Ah-wah-hav-ways. Collected by Captains Lewis and Clark."
