Object Description
Chilkat blanket with stylized crest figure representing a killer whale (or "Orca" - Orcinus orca). The field of the blanket is natural white goat wool, the figure of the whale is outlined in black, and particular tertiary areas are filled with yellow and blue. The borders are accentuated by two wide bands of yellow and black. Inside this black and yellow frame a complex tapestry of eyes, dorsal fin, head with open toothed mouth, fluke of the tail, and whale body is recognizable. The fringed rounded bottom and the use of yellow cedar as the core of the weft are characteristic of the Chilkat robe developed in the nineteenth century.
