Object Description
Oyster catcher rattle; constructed in the form of a "rock oyster catcher," from two pieces of wood attached together with string binding and a seam of parchment-like skin. Traces of pitch at seam suggest a previous method of binding. Hollow handle, bound with buckskin. The webbed feet of this species of seabird are carved in shallow relief on the bottom half of the rattle. Lively painting accents a dramatic scene played out in full and low-relief carving on the "stage" of the bird's back. Fast describes this piece as a "charming instrument, used for curing the sick.
