Written on board: "Total length 27 1/2 in. Length of blade 7 3/4. / Found about 8 or 10 miles from New Bedford in Buzzard's Bay about 1898. Obtained by Mr. Wood from farmer who found it. Found in sand under salt water. / Property of Frank Wood, Curator of Old Dartmouth Historical Society, New Bedford, Mass. / Now in Heye Museum, N.Y. City"
