Preparing a ritual penitent during Durga Puja. On the tenth and final day of the Dashain festival, which commemorates the slaying of a demon king by the Hindu goddess Durga, a male from each family performs a nightlong penance. By sitting through the night with oil lamps burning on his knees, shoulders, feet, and hands, the penitent cleanses the entire family of sin and bad karma. Bhaktapur, 1988, p. 201.
