Object Description
Carved wooden pulley with carved wooden head (approx 5 1/2" high, 2 1/2" wide)
The object a heddle pulley with a human head, carved from a single piece of wood. The oval shaped female head rests on an arch that contains a crossbar and cylindrical rollers. The carved head wears a cap and has facial features which are delicate and small. The long neck and face are incised with lines, most probably representing scarification. A hole, parallel to the length of the head is present on the back of the head. Two arrows, pointing upward are inciced on the verso of the arch. Modern pins or nails (2) extend from the base of the arch.
Identification marks: A Peabody Museum number is printed in black ink on the cylindrical roller. White tape with an arrow pointing in an upward direction and the number 3 appear on the PR lower side of the arch.
