Descriptions
Object Description
Ceremonial raven belt ornament or bustle, also called "the crow." Made from the skin of a single raven. Although the carcass appears to be a complete birds, it includes only the wings (stuffed with semi-tanned hide and plant fiber) and the head and beak (tucked to the inside against the primary waist support). A construction of wooden slats, porcupine quills, rawhide, and horsehair makes the wings and tail project outward from the wearer’s back. The more elaborate of the Peabody’s two single raven bustles, embellished with decorative loops of rawhide on the bird’s head.
