Display Title Small kapa fragment
Descriptions
Indigenous Term Kalukalu
Object Description Tapa. A small almost square, diaphanous single layer cloth made from off-white inner bark fibers. This delicate cloth (kalukalu) is very finely beaten; one half of it retains a ribbed beater pattern, while the other half possesses the qualities of a fine non-woven fabric having no visible ribbed or dot beater patterning. All edges have a cut finish. The area containing no beater pattern exhibits a field of colored spots that are probably applied by beating in very thin colored sheets or fragments. These colors are comprised of reds, browns and purples. Further analysis required. Identifying numbers: A Peabody Museum catalogue number in black appears on the verso.
