Object Description
Reddish-brown toned tapa is a well-beaten medium-weight cloth with four cut edges; ribbed and block-like beater patterning. Hand painted cross-hatching linear pattern on diagonal (creating diamond motifs in negative space) in matte black paint. Cloth type and beater pattern is very similar to the one featured in Brigham Vol III Plate AA no. 1. Ground color is very similar to Brigham Vol III Plate AA no. 11 and to Plate V no. 3. Design is done rather crudely in comparison to most other Hawaiian kapa pieces. An older catalogue number 48435 is written in black ink.See additional object description notes under conservation.
