Descriptions
Object Description
Loose-feather Peyote fan. Kiowa, dating from early 1900's or mid-late 1900's. In this ceremonial "loose-feather" style peyote fan 19 pheasant tail feathers, brown with black bars along their entire length, are wrapped separately at the base with whitened buckskin. Enclosed within each binding are short red and fuscia feathers encircling the quill. These appear to be died with non-natural dyes, though flicker or woodpecker feathers are traditional. The skin wrapped components are clustered and enclosed in a round beaded handle of small faceted beads in peyote stitch. The beaded design, on a white background, is the zig zag "rainbow" pattern in 3 shades of blue with black accents. From the base of the handle falls a long fringe consisting of 21 whitened buckskin strips, each one split and twisted on itself to form a rope-like cord.
