"Loose-feather" Peyote fan

Object Description
Ceremonial "loose-feather" style fan. Kiowa, early 1900's to late 1900's, made by David Apelcaum. Composed of 29 slender golden pheasant tail feathers, speckled brown at the base with about 12 cm of reddish pointed tips. Each quill is wrapped separately with whitened buckskin, and enclosed within the wrappings are short red feathers encircling each quill. (Flicker or woodpecker feathers are used traditionally.) The skin covered components are clustered and enclosed in a round handle of small faceted beads in peyote stitch technique. The medium blue background color of the handle supports encircling bands in zig zag designs, two in shades of green beads, and one in red shades with black accents.
