Object Description
Pair of small moccasins, Sioux, Cheyenne or Arapaho, from early 1900s, constructed of one piece for the uppers with a vertical heal seam of sinew and a separate sole piece of heavier leather. The cuff is short (4 cm) and the instep is cut straight across with no tongue. The left moccasin cuff has 3 pairs of vertical slits holding a drawstring of twill tape (shoestring?) to tie in front. The right shoe has no drawstring and only one vertical slit at the heel holding a loop of black embroidery cotton. The inside of the sole in the heel area is painted with designs in blue, black and red, different in each shoe. A 2 cm border above the sole is fully beaded in lazy stitch with white background and stepped triangle motifs in layers of green, blue, and red.
