Display Title Bone awl
Descriptions
Object Description The brownish-black tool may also come from a metacarpal, although that is more difficult to be sure about. Both metacarpals (front leg) and metatarsals (hind leg) are particularly well suited to shaping into these sorts of tools because they are straight and are largely hollow inside the bone except for at the two ends. The bone ridge that runs the length of the bone in the center of the shaft cavity reflects the fact that very early in the life of the animal (while still in the womb) these are two bones that join together to make a single element.
