Display Title Bone needle
Descriptions
Object Description The long lighter brown color tool is also from a metacarpal (less likely from a metatarsal). It was carefully split off down the length of the bone and modified/shaped both proximally (ground and polished) and distally (a "hook" carved into the end). There is a small form (sub-species) of white-tailed deer called Florida Key deer, Odocoileus virginianus clavium, that is today found only on the Florida Keys. It is both smaller and lighter in weight, meaning that it is more gracile. Perhaps this tool came from that form, although I cannot be at all sure about that.
