Object Description Skin armor, not for fighting. Depicts bear design; tanned. Fringed on one side, front painted with stylized black and red design. Hide Armor. One of the chief items traded to the northern Indians for sea otter furs were "clemmons," elk hides for shirts used as armor. Traders obtained these hides from southern villages along the mouth of the Columbia River and the Strait of Juan de Fuca and shipped them north.
