Descriptions
Object Description
Painted skin robe; double layered garment seamed at neck, shoulders and along one side. Unseamed side has skin fastenings. Three ties on the seamed side probably intended for decoration. One surface painted with an elaborate scene, whose central figure appears to be human with a wolf or bear features. The reverse has a simpler painted motif of circular and oval elements. Decorative painted band surrounds the lower edge, front and back. Hide armor. Hide and leather armor was used worldwide in ancient times. This spectacular painted tunic, decorated with the painted crest of a bear or sea bear, is one of the finest specimens of Northwest hide armor. The human inside the bear is maybe the story of Kaats (the hunter) and the bear. The den is on the back (the circle).
