Descriptions
Object Description
"Idol" carved in wood with a skin robe. Toy?. Doll - figure - shaman with cape; the precise function of these dolls is unknown, but it is presumed they played a role in shamanistic practice. Made from a single piece of wood, this one has a carved and painted naturalistic face, with human hair attached to the scalp. Its clothing includes a robe of painted hide, with fringed bib in front, and a long tapered collar in back. Painted crests are red, blue and black. Relative to the sensitive handling of the head, the legs are carved in a rudimentary manner. Underneath the robe the figure is wearing a fringed breechcloth. Not visible are two low-relief arms, carved in a bent, upraised position.
