Descriptions
Object Description
Cast of oval tablet - Palenque. Palenque, Oval Tablet Maya, A.D. 654
Palenque, Chiapas, Mexico
The young king of Palenque, K'inich Janahb Pakal, receives a feathered war headdress from his mother at his accession to rule on A.D. July 26, 615. His two-headed jaguar seat is a rare image in Maya art, but emphasizes the role of jaguars as symbols of royal authority throughout Mesoamerican cultures. The original tablet, now eroded, still remains in the palace at Palenque, where it was once set behind a throne used by all later Palenque kings at their own inauguration rituals.
