Object Description CAST of Stela 8, top portion. Copan Copan, Stela 8 Maya, A.D. 783 Copan, Honduras The original stone was destroyed in 1912, leaving this precious cast and one of the other side (not displayed) as the only physical record of the monument. The twenty glyphs record the inauguration of the sixteenth Copan king Yax Pasaj Chan Yopat in A.D. 763, and commemorate the king's ritual conjuring of an ancestral spirit twenty years later. Near the end of the inscription we read that the Copan ruler is the son of a royal woman from distant Palenque-a key piece of Maya history recorded only on this monument. [D. Stuart, 2001]
