Cast of sculpture, round disk,Aztec Earth Lord Aztec, A.D. 1400-1519 Tenochtitlan (Mexico City), Mexico The Aztec Earth Lord, Tlalteuctli, was the personification of the earth in both its creative and destructive aspects. The male/destructive incarnation depicted here was complemented elsewhere by three female/creative deities. This image, apparently trimmed down in size from an earlier design, was probably once the underside of a larger monument, as found in numerous similar examples. Tlalteuctli's portrait was invisible to viewers but served to properly "ground" the stone in its original setting. The splayed position of his body is meant to evoke the flat plain of the earth's surface, and the fangs and clawed hands suggest a powerful, raptorlike creature, perhaps a de[see Object Description text entry for extended description]
