Descriptions
Object Description
Cast of Nauhecatl, Standard Bearer
Aztec, circa A.D. 1500
Coxcatlan, Puebla, Mexico
This simply dressed male figure once held an upright standard or spear in his right hand. Although he cannot be identified, the glyph "4 Eagle" on the back of his head probably is a name. He may be an important local deity from the community of Coxcatlan, where this sculpture was found. Many similar examples of Aztec-period statuary were richly dressed in cloth and displayed within temple shrines. The small holes around this figure's hairline show where a headdress was attached.
