Descriptions
Object Description
Written on board: "Osage Indian, Siouan. Plate X, Painting by St. Memin. 770 St. Memin, Charles Julian Fevret de. Five original water-color drawings of American Indians. Size of each about 3 1/2 x 6 inches. All signed "St. Memin fecit." The lot $750.00. These beautiful examples of St. Memin's art are executed with the same delicacy which characterizes his well-known copperplate engravings of distinguished Americans. Three of them are particularly fine; the other two were done with somewhat less care but they are all of the greatest artistic and ethnological interest. Three of the paintings are named on the back, "Ozage," "Mandan King," and "Mandan Queen." The other two are unnamed. We have never seen earlier authentic drawings from life of native Americans."
