Object Description Written on board: "Baskets, California. Chumash related. South Coast. / (over) / Baskets collected by William Alden Gale, born Jan. 31st, 1790, died in Boston, Apr. 15th, 1841. Sailed as clerk on the "Albatross," from Boston to California in 1810. Lee Bancrofts History, Vol XIV, pages 654 & 681 - list of foreigners in California - and Vol's XIV & XV, pages 93, 94, (notes 27 & 29.), 82-474-475-476-653. Pastoral, page 464. "Last trip, on the "Roxana" in 1832, remaining on the coast as agent for Bryant & Sturgis of Boston till 1835." He gave these baskets to the family of his friend Joseph B. Eaton, whose daughter's the Misses Eaton, 373 Commonwealth Avenue, Boston, now have them in their possession.
