Wooden effigy of woman with labret
Descriptions
Object Description
Wooden effigy of woman with labret; the smaller dimensions of the figure and the absence of breasts may signify the representation of a young girl, though it is equally possible that the inclusion of a labret was felt to be a sufficient indicator of sex. Composed in a squatting position, the elbows rest on bent knees, with hands placed prayer-like under chin. Smoothly finished in hardwood, the body is unpainted except for red pigment on hands, feet, ears, mouth, and around the lower stomach and genital region, though the significance of this is unclear. Human hair on head is parted with vegetal fiber twine, and attached with resin. The oval labrets may indicate a Haida or Tsimshian source.
