Descriptions
Object Description
Wooden effigy of woman with labret; scuptured in hardwood (possibly maple), depicting a nude female wearing an oval labret. The smoothly painted bidy with well-defined sagging breasts, is unpainted. Red paint on hands, ears, feet and mouth. bilateral face painting, red on one side; green on other, with cross-hatched motif along temples. Human hair fastened to head with resin, parted in center with vegetal fiber twine. Compared with the free-flowing curves of low and high relief carving, the treatment of this three-dimensional figure is somewhat restrained. The body itself if rendered naturalistically, combined with a curiously stiff representation of arms and legs and a rather stylized rendering of the face. Compare with other free-standing figures, such as "shaman's dolls" and argillite carvings.
