Descriptions
Object Description
Mask. Protruding lower lip of woman, distended by insertion of a plug or labret, is a mark of nobility. Very early tlingit masks often have small and closely spaced eyes. Represents the spirit of a woman, as indicated by the labret in the lower lip. The mask is painted in an asymmetric design of brown, red, and black. The eyes are somewhat unusual in that the eyelids are carved. Also, the eyes are relatively close together, which suggests that the mask dates to the early nineteenth century.
