Descriptions
Object Description
Grotesque mask. Mask; carved in full relief, the striking broad, stretched lips suggest Tsimshian connections. Painted red, the large mouth contrasts with an over-all surface of light blue. Bilateral face painting, utilizing circular red motifs with black dots in centers. Painting (rather than low-relief carving) renders eyebrow, eye and teeth detail; spirit of devilfish/man. Fast (1869-30-10). Represents the spirit of the devilfish or a man with the powers of the devilfish spirit. The mask is painted green and has a minimum of carved detail. The eyes are painted, as are the lines of devilfish suckers on the cheeks and forehead. The mask is remarkably similar to PMAE 1606. The tones of the paint are the same, the treatment of the eyes are identical, and even the tentacles on this mask resemble the red stripe across PMAE 1606. (Steinhorn)
