Object Description May-mah-ska-waung-gay of the Mille Lacs Anishinaabeg drew this name (sturgeon) doodem in Washington DC in February 1907. My father used to tell me that in the time of his mother—my grandmother Nenagiizhigok—our lakes ran with giant namewag (sturgeons), their slippery black backs cresting the water appearing like waves. Collected by Frances Densmore. Part of David I Bushnell, Jr. collection. Written on verso: "Julius H. Brown. Mille Lac. May-mah-ska-waung-gay. Sturgeon. Washington Feb. 1907."
