Written on board: "Maori / New Zealand / Makerti Papakura working at a korowai mat. / The Maoris believed that taking these mats / for New Zealand would bring evil to both / maker and receiver. This cloak was believed / to have caused Makerti's death. Her sister / Bella believed it should be returned to New / Zealand and finished."
