Object Description
Written on board: "Maori / New Zealand / Short weapons or Patus, also used as batons by the chiefs. / 1. Wahaika - whalebone. Grotesque human figure carved on / back. / 2, 4, 6. Patu Ponammu. / 2 - of Kawa Kawa greenstone. 14" long, and 4.75" wide in / its widest part. / 4 - of Inanga greenstone; 12.5"x3.75". / 6 - charred by burning; 11"x3.25" / All these have been buried many times with the dead and / have been dug up again. / 3. Patu Paroa; whalebone; 15 1/2"x4 1/4. Used like Patu Ponammu for / smashing in the skull. / 5. Kotiate, or Meremere; whalebone; 13x5 1/2. (19)"
