Object Description Written on album page: "Mission Indians in front of their old church at Pala, So. California at the call / of Mrs. Helen Hunt Jackson, to meet Prof. C. C. Painter, and J W Davis. / In her last sickness at San Francisco, these friends, having known her in the EAst, before the issue of her famous story / of Ramona; Called and were interested by her to go and meet "her Indians" - altho it was then verging into mid-summer / heat. And representatives from the Indians from the district around Pala gathered on word from 'The Queen' as / they called her. Gathere in the Church, they reported the grievous encroachments of the Whites on their lands, their water / supplies, and their crops Since Mrs. Jackson Had, as commissioned by our Government, been able to work in their defence."
