Object Description Coiled bowl with flaring sides of willow or sumac. Very typical Navajo ceremonial basket with 13 black terraced units above 3 red lines with 7 black terraced units below to produce overall star effect. "Coiled ceremonial tray (Navajo wedding basket) is characterized by herringbone edge or finish of the basket. The usual design encircles the tray except for an opening/pathway to the outside of the circle. The finish of the basket is always opposite this opening in the design. This opening is the start of the coil, and the finish at the border must be in line (and point to the east in any ceremony)." Coiled over three rod construction. Rim is finished in herringbone stitch. Associated tag indicates basket was purchased at the Carson House Shop, Taos, New Mexico.
