Black-rimmed hat
Descriptions
Object Description
Conical in shape, resembling an onion-dome hat but with the knob on top replaced by a concave depression. Atypical of other black-rimmed Makah or Nuu-chah-nulth hats, however, in that its sides are not concave, it is somewhat broader, it is not as tall, and its design motifs are much less abstract. Dyes are red and black, with areas of natural fiber incorporated as a third color in two-dimensional designs. Iconographic elements include two stylized male elk heads with fully developed antlers, a large, black-outlined central oval shape which may represent a vulva, and two smaller oval shapes outside the interlocked antlers and opposite each other that appear to be eyes.
