Object Number 90-17-10/49333
Display Title Wool sash with glass beads
Descriptions
Object Description This narrow sash made from red wool also incorporates blue wool and nearly 1900 (remaining) white glass beads appliqued with plant fiber thread to create a curvilinear design. The selvedges, or edges of the fabric which include paired resist lines (white/undyed), are visible at the edges of the belt. The sash’s nineteenth-century label reads “Belt of the Indian King Phillip”, suggesting that this object was owned and worn by the Wampanoag sachem Metacom (also known as King Philip among the English) who led revolts against encroaching English colonists in southern New England the 1675-1676 King Philip’s War. While the written words of the label suggests that the sash may date to the mid-17th century, the design and material of the sash may suggest a slightly later, perhaps the early18th century, date of manufacture.
