Object Description
Sash, woven by the men and worn by the women as a belt (wukokwena). Warp-faced plain weave Hopi sash, 1892, in indigo-dyed single-ply z-spun, 3-ply red and black and 4-ply green s-spun wool. Composed of five vertical bands. Center band of red with blackand red warp float pattern of alternating diagonal zig-zag lines. Outside edges of sash are indigo-blue and separated from center band by green bands. Warp apperas to be brown. Sides are as woven and warp ends are twisted to create fringe. Length: 284 cm,; Width: 9.8 cm; Depth: .2 cm. Thread count: Warp -- 19 ends/cm; Weft -- 6 ends/cm. Good condition. One side has very faded portions and there are several unraveling spots on the side selvages. Also one spot where weft threads appear to be broken.
