Object Description
Sash, woven by the men and worn by the women as a belt (wukokwena). Warp-faced plain weave Hopi sash, 1892, in 4-ply light green and 3-ply dark green and red s-spun wool warp. Weft is brown wool. Composed of five vertical bands. Center band of red with dark green (appears to have originally been black) and red warp float pattern of diamonds outlined in stepped triangles. Outside edges of the sash are dark green separated from the center band by light green bands.. Sides are as woven, and warp ends have been twisted to create fringe. Length: 290 cm, Width: 9.7 cm, Depth: .2 cm. Thread count: Warp -- 19 ends/cm; Weft -- 6 ends/cm. Excellent condition structurally, but very faded, especially the dark green/black. Some loose weft threads on side selvages.
