Object Description
Fragmentary snuff box, ivory and tortoise shell. Tortoise shell sides decorated with bat motifs (means good fortune) of coral, with a central piece of mother-of-pearl with "WAN" (swastika) - a Buddhist symbol - in ivory. Ivory frame has decoration in relief and a square with Chinese characters in mother-of-pearl: <transliteration> ("Made in the year of Chian-long, Emperor"). Paddle (bone/ivory with cork and an ivory flower on the tip) with silk cord. <transliteration> (Chinese name). 4.5 cm. (?) x 3.7 cm. (?) x 1.4 cm. (?); cord: 14 cm. (l).
