Object Description Portrait or trophy head vessel. Head appears to be of a deceased male or male with eyes closed. The mouth is shown grinning with teeth bared. Teeth may be depicted to indicate tooth modification, a common practice throughout pre-Columbian Costa Rica. Protruding ears contain hollow ear spools. The individual is wearing a round cap adorned with five plastic applique bumps above the forehead and incised and punctate geometric designs along sides above ears. The vessels is painted with at least two, but possibly three different color pigments. The center of the vessel, including the area between the ears, below the hat and above the mouth s painted in a tan or salmon colored pigment. The hat and lower half of the face, including the area surrounding the mouth is in a deep red.
